The summer before her freshman year of high school, Alexandra “Ally” Marter visited the Great Lakes Bay College & Career Resource Center (CCRC). She learned of the CCRC from a college prep service officer (CPSO) at Pinconning High School.
During her first visit, she received a college prep survival kit, and for the past three years has been utilizing it regularly. Ally returned for a “refresher” visit just before her senior year. She brought her original kit with her, which was bursting with information she had gathered.
“The kit has helped tremendously the past few years,” Ally said, “I made my own college application and scholarship trackers modeled after the kit.”
“I also used the college visit guide to take notes and ask the right questions when I visited colleges in Florida over spring break,” she continued. Ally expanded her “credentials” folder as well by adding files for her past report cards, awards and certificates, letters of recommendation, and standardized test scores. She also added a file for each college she was interested in.
Ms. Marter hopes to attend the University of Michigan or a college in Florida. She plans to be a Marine Biologist and do different marine science research. Ideally, she would like to be a figurehead for public outreach in ocean conservation and educate others on the importance of the ocean.
"The College Resource Center has been instrumental in my preparation for college! From helping me figure out where to go, to the application process, and scholarship advice, the college prep survival kit helped me keep organized while the staff answered my questions and gave helpful tips. Even if you know what career you want to pursue and where you want to go, the college process is complex and confusing. However, with the help of the CRC, that process is simplified!"
